Enrollment Projections to 2020
January, 2012
Dear Liz,
The future remains unpredictable. Some events can be neither predicted nor controlled, such as: Is Facebook ready for the big time? Will the Giants advance to the Super Bowl? What is certain is that enrollment continues to grow. Enrollment in Postsecondary Degree-Granting institutions is projected to increase 13%, to 23 million from 2009-2020, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education are:
Projections of Education Statistics from 2009 to 2020:
Enrollment by Age of Student:
18-24 (9%); 25-34 (21%); 35 and older (16%)
Enrollment by Gender:
Male (8.0%); Female (16.2%)
Enrollment by Race:
White (1%); Black (25%); Hispanic (46%); Asian (25%); American Indian (1%)
Learner Outcomes:
- In 2010, young adults ages 25-34 with at least a bachelor's degree had a full-time employment rate that was over 30 percentage points higher than that of their peers who had not completed high school.
- Overall, 656,800 master's degrees and 67,700 doctoral degrees were awarded in 2008-09; these numbers represent increases of 49 and 54 percent, respectively, over the numbers awarded in 1998-99. In 2008-09, females earned 60 percent of master's degrees and 52 percent of doctoral degrees awarded.
- Between 1998-99 and 2008-09, the number of degrees conferred by private for-profit institutions increased by a larger percentage than the number conferred by private not-for-profit institutions and public institutions and this was true for all levels of degrees.
- Between 1998-99 and 2008-09, the number of degrees earned increased by 41 percent for associate's degrees, by 33 percent for bachelor's degrees, and by 49 percent for master's degrees. In 2008-09, females earned the majority of all associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees awarded.
While these projections do not factor in the cost of a college education, economic value of an education, or the impact of distance learning due to technological changes, they do provide a benchmark. Our environment is unpredictable and constantly changing. Prevail in such environments through:
